1965 Buick Riviera Radio & Antenna Troubleshooting

Antenna

  • This is an easier one, the motor runs when the switch is pushed, but the antenna does not go up and down. Liberal application of lithium grease did not help
  • https://forums.aaca.org/topic/183971-power-antenna-repair/
  • I bench tested antenna, motor runs in both directions as expected, but antenna does not raise or lower

Removal

  • Turned wheel fully to right
  • Removed access panel
  • Unbolted antenna from access panel
  • Unscrewed coaxial cable
  • Unclipped power wires
  • Slid antenna down out of chrome bezel on fender and removed through access panel

Unfortunately black plastic insulator in bezel is broken and no replacements made. Will attempt to glue back together.

Radio

  • Radio is a Delco Sonomatic with wonderbar. Expected model number is Delco 7285444 Source: http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/members/AardvarkPublisherAttachments/9990355273967/Delco_Radio_PNs_1-6.pdf
  • Either I don’t have a wonderbar foot switch or it is hidden by the carpet
  • I also have a reverb setup with a switch under the steering wheel and a reverb unit in the trunk

Speakers

  • Source: https://forums.aaca.org/topic/201522-correct-speaker-sizes-front-and-rear/
  • Front is 4×10 8-10 ohms
  • Rear is 6×9 8-10 ohms
  • http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm
  • 4×10 – Price – $49.95
  • 6×9 – Price – $49.95

Plan

  1. Removal of Radio
    1. Required removal of console trim. Would have required removal of the A/C controls but it wasn’t bolted to the cross-member
    2. Turns out radio wasn’t plugged in at all
  2. Removal of speaker
    1. Speaker just unbolted from underside of dashpad.
    2. PO had a 4 ohm speaker in place which is wrong for this radio. I don’t think it was ever hooked up since it the original speaker connector (which looks custom for the original speaker) is intact.
  3. Bench test radio with removed speaker or purchased speaker and AM antenna
    1. Purchased a cheap 6×9 speaker ($28)
    2. While waiting for it to show, hooked up radio to a 12v PSU, the lights came on the radio – promising!
    3. Connected speaker to radio – sound
    4. The manual tuning knob and the wonderbar motor are not working. I can fake tuning by using the preset buttons to move the dial. I took it apart but its not clear what is broken and parts are inaccessible.
    5. However, am going to try to hook it back up in the car, which will route it through the reverb unit
  4. Hooked up radio
    1. No sound – I don’t think the reverb unit is working. Next to troubleshoot if its salvagable

Faced with a decision:

  • Restore the stock radio, which looks like it would cost around $500 to be left with am AM wonderbar radio; no foot tuner since this one appears to be from a 64 and not original to the car. Ignore / remove reverb unit.
  • Rebuild as a modern AM/FM/Bluetooth radio. Buy front (at least) and rear dual voice coil speakers to get two-channel sound with stock speaker locations. Unclear in effort to route wire to rear speakers.

  1. I realize this is a year late, but what did you end up doing? I’m going to be installing a power antenna and just got my AM stereo back with the FM receiver and Bluetooth module from Aurora designs added. Also installed new speakers.

    • I never did move forward with this. But when I pick back up again, my plan would also be to get the bluetooth module installed with a modern duel voice-coil speaker at front.

How did your Aurora designs rebuild work out and which speakers did you end up going with?
